Focault and Social media: life in a virtual panopticon

The article on social media, contained many interesting and  some what controversial points. The metaphorical reperesentation of social media being like that of a panopticon, I find to be a distilling image that everything we ever say or do on Facebook and twitter, can be seen by our selected audience. This shows that without realising, we are constantly being watched without our knowing, through social media sites. The author, Tim Rayner compares a panopticon prison cell to the social media sites, stating how in the prison situation, the prisoners are never sure who is watching them as they can not see the guards, but they know that if there is a possibility that there is someone watching, they will 'regulate their behaviour'. He compares this to Facebook, saying how many people will put up a status bearing in mind that it could possibly be seen by a variety of different people, and that they could be judged from that post or tweet. This point I found very relevant to myself as a few times she  i have posted on a social media site, I have thought long and hard about how that post represents me, because, as the article states, these 'impact our personal identity'.

The meaning of Poetry

Carl Sandburg has described poetry in many different ways and in many different levels. His book on descriptions of poetry contains one certain answer , describing poetry as " a puppet-show, where riders of skyrockets and divers of sea fathoms gossip about the sixth sense and the fourth dimension". This shows how Sandburg believes that poetry can sway in multiple directions, and explore non-physical aspects of life and death and also queer and bizarre topics. I chose this definition because I agree that poems have the capability to be very peculiar and all are completely unique of each other.
